What is DanceAwakenings?
You do not become a good dancer by trying to be a good dancer. You become a beautiful dancer by giving the dancer inside of you space and freedom to emerge. There is a dancer inside of all of us. Maybe she's not graceful or talented by your standards, but let's throw those standards to the wind and let her out!
DanceAwakenings™ combines yoga and dance. It begins like a traditional yoga class, moving into more organic stretching, being encouraged to allow your own body to lead your movement rather than following the instructor. Eventually evolving into more freeform movement, going from deep and subtle to fun, energetic and maybe even a little crazy. Then slowing down, doing deeper within, culminating in a guided relaxation and meditation.
Combining yoga with dance is about inviting inner peace, then entering into a moving meditation lead by the beat of the music and the rhythm of the body, free from the usual mental restraints that bind us, feeling the joy and release of energy that occurs from being in this state of connection between mind, body and spirit moving as one.
On teaching the 1st danceAwakenings™ class to 50+ people….
What makes a danceAwakenings event so special, unique and powerful is the energy you feel from all of the people in the room, the room just came alive, the energy was completely contagious. It was almost like the room itself transformed under my eyes, it was the most beautiful thing for me to witness as a teacher. As a participant, I feel permission to move in new and experimental ways, knowing that nobody is judging me which allows me to stop judging myself. Once the judgment is gone, that is just one more layer that is pealed away, helping to uncover the beauty and truth that lies within. It is an amazing feeling, invigorating and peaceful at the same time. - Becky Acabchuk February 2, 2008
